vague belief, however, exists that the disease was first introduced by Indian labourers who came to build pagodas (Buddhist temples) at Pagan. On the other hand, there is every probability that epidemics occasionally spread from southern China where cholera was described by the very name it now bears, over two thousand years before the Christian era (Maxwell, 1929). A systematic record showing the mortality rate for cholera in Burma (Bozman, 1937) is only obtainable since 1872 after the country had passed under British control. Rogers (1928) refers to this record and, correlating the mortality rate with figures of absolute humidity deduced from various meteorological data, arrived at the conclusion that Lower Burma is ' a typically endemic' area. But there is

Cholera, Migration, and Global Health – A Critical Review

Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection caused by the ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The causative agent of this disease was originally described by Filippo Pacini in 1854, and afterwards further analyzed by Robert Koch in 1884. It is estimated that each year there are 1.3 million to 4 million cases of cholera, and 21 000 to 143 000 deaths worldwide ...

Sub-Types of Cholera Vibrio Isolated from Cholera Patients in Bombay

That the strains of cholera vibrio isolated m epidemic and sporadic outbreaks differed frona each other on immunological grounds was first demonstrated by Japanese workers as early as 1913 ; they called them 1 original' and ' varied respectively (Kabeshmia, 1913). It was left to Gardner and Venkatraman (1935) however to confirm the existence of serological sub-types within the classical sub-gro...

Expression of Recombinant Protein B Subunit Pili from Vibrio Cholera

Background & Aims: Vibrio cholerae is a gram-negative bacterial pathogen that causes cholera disease. Following ingestion by a host and entry into the upper intestine, V. cholera colonizes and begins to emit enterotoxin. One of the most pathogenic factors of Vibrio cholera is toxin-coregulated pili (TCP). ToxinCoregulated pili is as the primary factor requiered for the colonization and insisten...
